Westbourne School is situated in the small seaside town of Penarth, a few miles west of Cardiff. The school is open to boys and girls from three to sixteen years and pupils are drawn from an area which includes Penarth, Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and the Rhondda Valleys.
The school is administered by a partnership, the members of which are themselves headteachers involved with the day to day teaching in the school. The teaching staff work closely together to achieve a co-ordinated and consistent approach throughout. Academic standards are high, but the main concern is to ensure that the pupils' learning keeps up with teaching, and to this end, weekly staff meetings as well as other frequent discussions are held with the headteachers.
A high priority is given to maintaining discipline, but there is also a concern to create a context in which pupils are supported and helped.
The Common Entrance syllabus is followed in the Prep Department, leading to the examination at 13 years, either to our own Westbourne College or to other senior independent schools, some of which already have links with Wesbourne.
The College pupils take the GCSE examination and results are consistently good.
The nursery department for 3-5 year olds, is under the care of an experienced primary teacher. The children benefit from the facilities available to the primary and prep schools, and active cooperation is maintained among the departments, resulting in a stable and familiar environment.
